Mini-Zooms

About Mini-Zooms

AF DuPage continues a new concept – the mini-Zoom session – a 20 minute focused presentation on a French-themed subject.

Most  sessions will take place on Thursday afternoons promptly at 12:30 pm, a  perfect midday break to add some French culture into your schedule.

The  topics and presenters will vary. Most will be conducted in English, but  we may add some French language mini-Zooms into the mix. Zoom links are reserved for AF DuPage members and will be sent out the day before the session. Visit our Membership page to join or renew your membership.

Do you have a great idea for a mini-zoom?  We would love to hear about it.  Please contact us at afdupage@gmail.com with your ideas.

MARK TWAIN AND JOAN OF ARC; WHAT'S THEIR CONNECTION?

Thursday, August 21 from 12:30 - 1:00 PM on Zoom

Presented by Paul Herbert

While visiting Mark Twain’s home in Hartford, CT, last year, I was surprised to find a book in the gift shop by the celebrated American story-teller on Joan of Arc entitled

Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc.  Of course, Joan and Twain were not contemporaries, so how could this be? I bought and read the book and learned much about both of them which I will share with AFD members.

Soirée en Blanc

Saturday, September 6 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM

Pottawatomie Park in St. Charles, IL

8 North Ave, St. Charles, IL along the Fox River about 1/4 mile north of RT 64.  (Map)

The Chicago Northern Illinois Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF) has been organizing the Soirée en blanc since 2019.  The DuPage chapter of the Alliance Française has always had a good turnout for this event.

The event is both a potluck and a byob.  AATF pays the rental fees for both the pavilion reservation and the beer and wine permit (not to sell, just to byob).  There are traditional picnic tables in the pavilion and nice restrooms within walking distance.  Electric outlets are available for crock pots, etc.

You may bring food to share with your table, your group, or with all.  Everyone dresses all in white, but food can be any color!  There will be one or two mixer activities.

There is parking about a 5-6 minute walk from the pavilion.  No need to bring tables and chairs. We provide white plastic table cloths and simple centerpieces, but participants are free to bring any fancier things for their table as well.

Registration and Fee Payment

Advanced registration and payment of the registration fee online is preferred using the link below.  However, you may  mail a check or pay the fee at the event.

online baking demo: Lacey Tuiles and Craquants

Pistachio, Hazelnut, and Honey Lacey Tuiles and Craquants

In your culinary travels, you may have seen lacey tuiles as an accompaniment to a special dessert. The same ingredients can be used for a crisp cookie called a craquant.

Chef Chris Thielman and Karen Thielman have enjoyed this type of craquant cookie for many years when traveling in the Dordogne region of France. They look forward to sharing their versions of both recipes using pistachio, hazelnuts, and honey.

Program duration: about 40 minutes
