Rendez-vous avec Nous

Saturday, February 11, 2023

2-4 pm Central Time

Bubblehouse Brewing Company, 2121 Ogden Avenue, Unit A, Lisle, IL

This is your opportunity to say “Bonjour” to other AF DuPage members and to interact with the leadership team. The details are simple!

  • All members - long timers or new - are welcome.
  • Hear about upcoming events
  • Share your thoughts about AFD: what you like, what you’d like to see added or changed
  • Speak French or not, depending on your ability. We understand our French language skills vary greatly.

Find us in the private back room. If you enter through the front, go to the back left.  If you enter through the back, we will be on the left before you get to the main room.  Look for the French flags on the tabletops!

Stop by for a few minutes or a couple of hours as your schedule allows. No charge to attend - simply support our venue by purchasing something to drink onsite.  In addition to their own beers, they carry cider, wine and nonalcoholic beverages. Since Bubblehouse does not carry food, we will be providing some snacks.

Upcoming Rendez-vous avec Nous dates at Bubblehouse:

France's Role in the American Revolution

A special evening program by Col. (Ret.) Paul Herbert

Wednesday, February 15, 2023 – 7:00 pm Central Time

If Americans think of France in the American Revolution at all, they probably think of two things: Lafayette and Yorktown. Both, of course, were very important. But there was much more: diplomacy, espionage, intrigue, great power rivalry, smuggling, money, great naval and land battles and the sublime irony of an absolute monarchy nurturing a revolution against monarchism. And Benjamin Franklin as well! It could well be argued that the USA owed its independence to France.

Col. (Ret.) Paul Herbert is a member of Alliance Française DuPage and worked for several years as the Executive Director at the First Division Museum in Cantigny Park, Wheaton IL. He is a repeat presenter to our organization.

For AF DuPage and AF North Shore members only. Please RSVP  by February 13 to receive the Zoom link to be sent to respondents on February 14.

Online Baking Demonstration: Sacristains (Puff pastry with sliced almonds and royal icing)

Saturday, February 25 at 11:00 am

When entering a French boulangerie you might see these twisty, sugared pastries in the display case. Chef Chris Thielman and Karen Thielman discovered a delicious version of the sacristan pastry at a traditional boulangerie in Lyon. Upon returning home, they created a sacristain recipe featuring an additional layer of royal icing that they hope you will enjoy.

Program duration: about 50 minutes

The recipe will be posted on our Recipes page soon.

For AF DuPage and AF du North Shore members only.

AF DuPage members do not need to pre-register for this event.

A Zoom link will be sent the day before the event to all AFD members.

For AF du North Shore members only, please send an RSVP request to afdupage@gmail.com.

Most  sessions will take place on Thursday afternoons promptly at 12:30 pm, a  perfect midday break to add some French culture into your schedule.

The  topics and presenters will vary. Most will be conducted in English, but  we may add some French language mini-Zooms into the mix. Zoom links are reserved for AF DuPage members and will be sent out the day before the session. Visit our Membership page to join or renew your membership.

A virtual wander through the Savoie

A mini-Zoom by Alan Tausch and Jerri Pease

Thursday, February 2 – 12:30 pm – On Zoom

Join AF DuPage members Jerri and Alan as they share their memories of the Savoie region of the French Alps which they traveled to a few years ago. We’ll go from its scenic mountain villages and high alpine pastures to the delightful city of Annecy. We’ll also browse through an open air market, explore some of the local food specialties, and learn a little bit about the history of this region, which was formerly an independent country ruled by the Dukes of Savoie.

Contemplating immersion and studying in France?

A mini-Zoom by Jennifer Jerzyk

Thursday, February 16 – 12:30 pm – On Zoom

Ever thought about taking an immersion program in France? AF DuPage member Jennifer Jerzyk is currently on a long-stay immersion course in Toulouse. In this Mini-Zoom, she will cover the process for requesting the appropriate visa through the French Consulate in Chicago as well as the necessary procedures upon arrival to register for French medical services and ID cards. She’ll also discuss her experience taking French at a B-1 intermediate level at a private language school in Toulouse and her family home-stay experience.

AF DuPage programs are reserved for AF DuPage members only, although occasionally we invite members of other AF chapters to participate in special programs.  Due to security and privacy reasons, AF DuPage program, event and recording links may not be shared, posted or broadcast.
