Synopsis of Film
Le Tableau (2011) Directed by animator and director, Jean-Francois Laguionie
A painter has not finished his work and this has caused chaos and encouraged creation of a caste system among the characters in this particular painting. The Toupins (Allduns) are entirely painted, live in the chateau enjoying lavish amenities and think they are better than the Pafinis (Halfies) who mostly lack a few colors and live in the garden. Finally, the Reufs (Sketchies) are outcasts, barely tolerated by the Pafinis and downright hunted by the Toupins. The Toupins believe that the painter is not coming back to finish the painting and since they are complete, they are by default in charge to rule over his kingdom.
Claire, a Pafini is in a forbidden relationship with Ramo, an outspoken Toupin. When Claire is chastised by the other Pafinis for her forbidden relationship, she escapes into the cursed forest. Ramo is heartbroken and joins a Lola, a fierce Pafini and Plume, a timid Reuf on a quest to find her and to change their outcomes. By finding the painter and convincing him to finish the painting, they believe they can create a harmonious environment for all. They traverse through the painting and through another painting; eventually ending up in the painter’s studio. Overwhelmed by all of the creations in the studio that are in various states of disarray, they visit painting after painting in search of the painter.
Stunning and captivating visuals with nods to artists such as Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall and Pablo Picasso, this film is a brave and innovative gem. Art lovers, action film lovers and those who appreciate a fresh interpretation of timeless parables will find it uplifting.
